I had lidocaine both times my tongue was cut for initial splitting and then cutting the regrowth. I think a lot of people just don't mention anesthetics a lot of the time because of legality issues (at least in the US, idk about other places).
I don't think stretching a tongue piercing is really necessary, but I also can't really input how much it may or may not help since I had mine split from nothing. It's held up really well, though, for being cut just twice.

I finally got it! My tongue are crooked as hell, so we chose to not do a deep split because the tongues could decide to stay wonky and that would exeggerate the unevenness. Day 3 at the moment, and everything is fine. Drinking ice water and are able to talk, work and even talked to my sister on the phone today and she did not ask about me sounding a bit weird. Will sort pictures so i can contribute with it in the gore thread, but here is the result just after the blood was cleaned off my face. (Bleeding was a bit disapointing. Did not bleed as much as i would have thought)

AHA ITS BEEN A FEW YEARS BUT I DISTINCTLY REMEMBER BEING HERE TO ASK about tongue splits and I bit the bullet and got it done on the 10th!! I'm not sure how to add pictures on mobile but I got a nice deep split. Just thought I'd bring it full circle to the first place I tried to reach out to people!

I've had my tongue split for over a year now and I will say that it is without a doubt my favorite body mod to date. I live in a state (FL) where it is illegal to have this done "professionally" by a piercing/tattoo shop as it is considered a "surgical procedure". I actually did it myself (which I do not condone or recommend by the way). I work in the medical field so I had access to the required tools and the means for proper after care/healing. The way I split mine leaves the tongue flat and it appears normal until I wish to split it. When I see others that had theirs done professionally, their tongue is turned into two, more or less, rounded pieces and is very noticeable when they talk. The way I did it leads to regrowth that I have to "recut" every few months to put the split back to where it originally started. I've heard of regrowth happening with stitches and cauterization, but I've also been told it's not as "agressive" as mine.
My split is relatively "shallow" as compared to one done professionally. It's more of a forked tongue than a complete split, but in my profession that is all I could probably pull off anyways.
My healing time was relatively short; about 12 days give or take. I was able to eat normally the next day, and talking without a lisp came naturally in a few short days. I was using the "tie off method" to start, but once I hit the nerve in the tip I started to have refered mandibular pain, so I picked up a couple scalpels from work and went to town when I knew I had a few days off coming up. All I did was cut, stick some sterile gauze between the two sides for a few days to prevent them from healing back together, and viola. Because of the way I split my tongue, I have the option for complete, 100% healing if I desire later on by simply slicing the inside edges and letting it heal back together. Stitching and cauterizing do not allow for this, as far as I know.
I had 3 tongue piercings when I started this journey; snake eyes, and two vertical centered bars. I had to take them out during the process for obvious reasons, but once healed I went and got venom bites which I still have and have not had any issues with.
My biggest pet peeves are food and such getting stuck in the center (very odd feeling for me), and the structural rigidity has been compromised so it's difficult to use your tongue to clean your teeth of food particles. They aren't major issues, but they do become annoying at times.

There is a human genetic oddity that a small percentage (10% maybe) of the population can twist their tongue in only one direction.
