I wanted to buy my sister some non metal labret studs for christmas, since she currently only has one metal stud, and was talking about getting a bigger collection. She also has some surgeries coming up where she obviously can't wear the metal, and she's scared about it closing up. However I've no idea what kind of materials fit that other than plastics and organics; I usually avoid plastics because I've always had reactions to them, and the other thing is that i worry that the threads on plastic jewellery would be really sharp? And organics i don't know if they come in such a small gauge. I don't know the length of jewellery she wears (and neither does she), but i do know that her piercing is 14G/1.6mm. Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should look for, and what length is the average for a central labret? I don't have a huge amount of money, so as much as i would obviously prefer to get her some quality jewellery over a poor quality bargain, i also cant be spending £300 sadly thanks for reading :3 Side note: first time starting a thread on the new forums oooo

Glass could be an option and the wearable length on those pieces is usually longer than what a regular labret fit would be. Depending on the surgery and doctor preferences, jewelry may not be allowed at all.
I wear 1/4" - 5/16" (6-7.5mm) in my philtrum, if that helps!

Have her talk to her surgeon if she hasn't already. Some will let her keep everything in sometimes. It also depends on what they're operating on as well.

Alicia - of course, i completely forgot about glass! Would i be better off going for gorilla glass or do you think normal glass would be ok? (thinking about it breaking/shattering). And yeah thankyou, any length ideas are helpful at this point as i have no idea X) I never got past the really long bar for healing with my own labret, so Rayne - yeah she already has, well they mentioned that shes not allowed any metal, however non-metal jewellery is allowed. Which wouldn't be a prob if it wasn't for the fact that she has one metal stud and thats it

I have some from Buddha Jewelry, but I think Modifika and Glasswear Studios also make 14g SF plugs/labrets.

Na i think the thing is metal - she hasn't talked about it much, but im pretty sure she has to go for one of those scans with the big magnets. Or something with magnets involved idk. Basically, she doesn't want it to rip out I will look into neometal for myself though i though if they look like freckles! That sounds like a useful thing to have

I just had my wisdom teeth out. I made sure to ask because I wasn't confident in being able to get jewelry back in my forward helix immediately after. The surgeon was super cool about it and said no metal or glass. So I ended up wearing a bioplast labret for like two days and switched when I was feeling better. Just call the surgeon before you buy anything.

I have a bioplast labret stud with an opal end. It is a push fit so no threads to deal with. I was pierced with a 3/8" post, had to size up to 1/2" due to excessive swelling. I am currently in an 11/32" post but could easily go down to 5/16". My labret is centered just below my lower lip. The hole inside my lip is very high compared to the hole on the outside, almost a vertical labret but not quite. Before anyone blasts my piercer about poor placement, that how I requested it to be done.

Depending on the type/length of surgery she can always use a retainer then swap it out when she's out of recovery. Since its an oral piercing I guess the concern is whatever you use would possibly fall out? I guess ideally would be if she can remove it completely and reinsert later. I've heard of people working up how long they can go without jewelry before successfully so if you can't find anything appropriate there's always that.
The one surgery I was well enough to out everything back in almost immediately after being placed in the room. There's one that I can't remember what I did. I think I put everything back in when I got home. One I didn't bother because it was completed in the office but I'm blanking on the 4th one.
I've been told the same thing re:metal but I always ask my surgeon and they usually want things out of the way in case something happens like a cardiac arrest, etc. and for your safety as well. I was told nipple piercings were a no go but anything else was okay as long as I took some of it out (basically what I could). Agsin, it depends on the surgeon and the relationship you have with them.

Yeah, metal in MRIs(magnetic field thing ) is a no-no for most techs. It was for mine when I had my MRI on my knee last week. I would say for both MRI & surgery plastic, bioplast, or glass would be the way to go. Most people detest putting plastic in their piercings, but since it's temporary I don't see it as an issue. I had a combo of all 3 in my piercings for my MRI, with the exception of my lobes, I wore stone sf plugs.

Thank you all, i ended up buying her a quartz glass retainer ^_^ she would have taken it out but she literally always wears the same metal bar - it'd close up in an hour or so if she took it out. As far as training is concerned, i don't know if i could convince her to do something like that X) she said she dribbles out of it when she takes it out so she usually doesn't like to Thankyou all again, and darkt3mpest i hope your knee's ok!
