I really want to get my tongue pierced but I'm scared of getting an infection. Due to past piercings, I know I am quite prone to infections due to my stretchers, cartilage, belly button and conch getting infected. I've read some stories about people who had gone into septic shock due to bacteria such as strep, getting into their blood through the open wound. The articles had said that all equipment was sterilized properly and I was just wondering how it would've happened? If you carry a bacteria that can be fatal if it got into your blood stream, could it be prevented if you took precautions and kept up with aftercare or is it inevitable due to the open wound and the wrong kind of bacteria in the mouth?

True infections are really rare tbh. If you go to a reputable piercer who conforms to industry standards then the risk is as low as it can be. Aftercare is important obviously, but being generally clean/hygienic and leaving it alone is generally the best aftercare. Touching the piercing excessively or putting things like pens/dirty fingers in the mouth etc is probably the cause of some of those horror stories.
If piercing was really that risky, it would have died out in prehistory. Your body can handle a lot don't worry, it works best when left to do its job.

Thank you, that was actually really reassuring I think I'll try for it today.
