What's the earliest major news story you remember?

I remember my parents making me throw away some things I got out of toy machines because of potential lead paint. Not exactly a "news" story.

I remember seeing a headline about Eisenhauer, but I can't remember much about it.

I stayed with my Grandma for a few weeks in the summer when I was 10. I woke up before her one morning and went downstairs to watch TV and EVERY channel was talking about Princess Diana's death. I remember thinking "I guess I better go tell Grandma, seems like a big deal since they're playing over my cartoons." She told me I was lying LOL

9/11 is probably the most formative one, though I have vague pop culture things I remember caring about before then. I wouldn't really call them "news".
I remember being confused why everyone was panicked about y2k happening and why that new year was different than any other.

JonBenét Ramsey - I remember seeing her face on the tabloids at the grocery checkout and my parents talking about it

Oh I think I finally figured out mine: Halley's Comet in 1986. 🌎☄ It missed.

For me, I'm pretty sure it was when Mount St. Helens erupting in 1980.

For me, I'm pretty sure it was when Mount St. Helens erupting in 1980. Oh hey I remember being told about that in '81 or '82. I was on the east coast then, and now I live almost exactly 100 miles from Mount St. Helens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The pilot pointed out the volcano as we went by.

I remember going through my grandparents slide photos from trips they took with my dad & siblings in the mid/late 80s and they had some around Mt St Helens and it was just unrecognizable so soon after the eruption... I was last there probably around 2012 and it's impressive how much has grown back, but also how easy it is to see how much damage was done. Despite living up here the last 8 years or so I haven't been back - it's a long drive and easier to go to/from Mt Rainier instead for a day trip.
