"They seem to be doing ok, but the squirrels climb the building and get to my 3rd floor balcony and dig in my damn garlic!" This is amazing! We don't have squirrels here so this is extra adorable to me. I suspect it's just too hot for cilantro here. The squirrels aren't afraid of ANYTHING either. Maybe the cats... but I went to shoo one away and it came up to my window and looked at me like I was invading his space!! Cilantro does not seem to like the late-summer heat AT ALL here. Seattle is pretty mild in the summer as well and once it hits our 12 hour of sun days with temps over 80-85, it just gets so sad. Once it cools off a bit, it will come back to life. I had some errant seeds start sprouting in with my garlic in November.

does anyone have any tips for a first time gardener? i've watched my parents do it for years but never really partook and my partner tried but never succeeded so we need lots of teaching. or any resources would be super appreciated! we're in eastern north carolina if that helps
we're doing some herbs, strawberries, and a variety of hot peppers just cuz it's our first year and i'm scared to spend too much money just in case we fail lmao

I always tell myself I'll plan better and then I don't. I did find this video rather informative (and the part 2): www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGjfq2kyBqsI like his channel overall quite a bit as well.

Just picked up some gladiola and lily bulbs for my front raised planter and back side area! This is my first spring with a home to plant things outside in, so who knows if these are good choices but I wanted to try something!
I also want to try blackberries in containers, and some honeysuckle, but I haven't had much luck finding those things in person here. I know some varieties of honeysuckle are invasive, and want to be careful about that since I probably wouldn't be able to identify the native versions vs. the invasive ones.
There's also some plant that the previous owners planted that just basically disintegrated over the winter, but I want to see if it might come back before I try to put something else there. Restraining myself from buying an ornamental pom pine was my exercised for today.

We have a consultation with a landscape architect next week! We live on a hill and about half of our property is inaccessible right now, behind the fence. Its a mess of vines, overgrown brush, trash (we can see a full size vintage green GE fridge, tires, a plastic tricycle, and some other random stuff)... We want to clean it all up, get the small trees removed, ivy pulled off the larger trees, and maybe have it tiered (depending on cost- if its ridiculous we'll just deal with the hill as is). We want to have some hang out spaces, at least one dining and one "hang out" where we can set up our projector and some comfy seats.

We started our backyard project...
We are actually skipping the landscape architect for now. We brought an excavation company in so we could see what were working with... The hill had a plateau then a straight drop. So they are currently bringing in dirt to level out areas so they can tier and clear the hill as they go down. We are on load 6 of dirt for today. But he's going to use rocks to build some tiers and extend the fence. There really isnt another way around it right now. So once thats done we will reevaluate and go from there. We also have to figure out how to get the giant downed oak tree out, its too large for his crew to remove safely (6-7ft in diameter at the largest point with the roots spreading even wider), so we may be looking at a tree crew coming in and chopping it up... which would allow us to have a very large amount of wood for the fire pit... for us and other neighbors.

http://instagram.com/p/CPsUMp6HihY Not sure if the picture is going to work, but my peace lily is flowering! I've had it for many years and it's never flowered after the initial flowers it had when I bought it. Google suggests they're forced on for the shops and quite hard to get them to flower otherwise. I moved it to a different windowsill about a year ago and I guess it's happy here!
