hi! here's a thread to brag about saving money! what did you get a huge discount on? or did you get a full refund? what did you decide not to buy in favor of saving for a nest egg or a better item later?
to start the thread off, i flew down to LA on wednesday to surprise a friend for his birthday. i had to call to make the reservation because alaska's website was broken, & because i was inconvenienced by their hold time & all, they gave me a $125 discount code for a future flight. on the way back, the flight was delayed several hours & i didn't get home until about 4am - so i called again, & they gave me another $50 code. considering the original flight only cost $155, i can't be too mad about getting $175 back. :D

we decided to go to portland instead of seattle for spring break/anniversary and saved like 300 dollars. Even tho its more flights are farther away??? Either way it will be nice to get away for a few days.

Did my first order from collectif. I got 3 things that were on sale and it was under $100 compared to the $300 it would have been to get similar items in the city.

I went to the zoo, and since I got a membership for Christmas, my boyfriend and I got in free and I didn't have to pay for $16 parking.
Also, afterwards we went shopping and I resisted a pair of shoes I've seen online and contemplated buying. I need to constantly remind myself that as pretty as they are, I don't wear heels.

i don't know exactly how much i saved buuut
we went shopping today for some basic household things (cutlery, couple pieces of cookware, plates, etc), since our roomie is leaving and she had it all when i moved in with her. we went around to a couple discount stores like tuesday morning & ross and got most of it on the cheap. we also got a 5 qt dutch oven instead of a saute pan + stockpot since it can easily serve the purposes of both for us. might prevent me from consistently cooking way too much soup & chili too lol. seeing as the other day i was eyeing 10 pc cookware sets on the internet, i'd say we were pretty thrifty!

I went with my aunt yesterday to Books by the Pound (I think it's local only? It's a used bookstore that sells the books literally at a price per pound). We were getting children's books for my cousin's baby shower that's coming up in May. My aunt got a 10% discount for being a retired teacher and the guy working there was so nice, he gave me her discount, too. She got at least a dozen books for $24. I got 4 books for $9 and I'm stoked to be giving my cousin a Franklin the Turtle book for the baby.

I bought a vegetable farm share and a meat farm share for this summer. Technically it's spending money now to save more later, but I think that counts. According to my rough calculations I'll save around 20% on the veggies and more like 30% on the meat. I'll probably end up supplementing them with more stuff, but being a "member" also gets me an additional discount on other stuff. Looking forward to low grocery bills all summer!

I just got an email today that New Balance is sending me a pair of shoes to demo and document under certain conditions for the next month. I do this for my boyfriend and he's got a pair of running shoes he's working on right now. They even give return postage, so you get to wear a $60 pair of new shoes for awhile. I also ended up buying a Chewy.com Goody Box Grain-Free for my cats a few days ago with money left over from doing a group with trying and giving feedback on 5 different products that went along with chicken nuggets. So I had a free meal and cash when I walked out. Right now the girls are eating a case of food I saved almost $12 as an intro offer. They like it. I win. I also did a campaign two weeks ago with a flexible tripod for smartphone that came with bluetooth remote, and they're going for $20-25 on Amazon, but it cost me $4. I didn't do a 5 star job, but my rating is still 4.8+ while looking for other work, and now I have this useful tool.

Today I saved money by organizing my fridge and freezer and making a meal plan for the next week or so. Thus avoiding letting anything in the fridge go bad, impulse take-out, and accidentally buying more of stuff I already have.

Today I saved money by organizing my fridge and freezer and making a meal plan for the next week or so. Thus avoiding letting anything in the fridge go bad, impulse take-out, and accidentally buying more of stuff I already have. this is the first thing i do when i make a meal plan! i go thru my stuff and make a list of everything that i have, and then i go thru the publix/winn-dixie/whatever store ad and make a list of everything i eat that is on sale, and then i make the meal plan based off those two columns. i've actually been really bad about eating out lately so i am going to try to get back on the wagon and NOT spend that take-out money today.

I hear you on eating out way too much lately. Aside from meal planning, I've found it helps me to stock a few super low effort convenience foods like frozen lasagna and pot pies. On days I'm too busy or just can't muster the energy to actually cook, I can usually talk myself into popping something like that into the oven at least. It's still easier on the budget than takeout, and I can reserve eating out for times that I'm specifically craving something or date night or whatever.
