Aww I love black kitties. They're so sweet. I got Tonks on a leash exploring the backyard today, I've been harness training her for a couple weeks and it's going great. I think she'll be able to join daughter and me on our park trips soon.

Omg weasel ball, my mother was telling me she wanted to get Tonks one but she couldn't remember what they were called, so thank you for that lol.
I had a cat previously who I attempted to harness/leash train, but it did not work. He didn't have the right disposition for it. He was very shy, and terrified of being outside.
I knew right away with Tonks that she'd be perfect for harness training so I'm super excited to get her out and about. She's very social, curious, friendly, and obedient. I'm going to be the weirdo in the neighborhood that walks her cat though lol.

I harvested these grove snails over the summer and they currently live in a cage on my shelf.

For some reason my java fern in my aquarium has all died except four leafs. I've never had problems growing java fern before. The betta I have now has always been sickly too, idk what the problem is. I tried using a broad antibiotic when I first brought him home butbit didn't make any difference. Tried a parasite treatment, no difference. I mean, it's been a year and little sickly dude is still alive. I just feel bad for him. What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate looking like?

I've tested on and off, everything is low enough to not even register. It's a 5 gallon, I'm doubtful it cycled.

Yeah, if you've been testing and it's not registering anything you may not be cycled. Cycling to me is always the pain in the ass part of the aquarium hobby. But, I would say that's probably what is affecting the betta. If you don't already, I suggest getting Prime if you're in the US, or if it's available in the country you live in (assuming you might not live in the US lol). It's a dechlorinator and also has live bacteria that is beneficial to aquarium cycling. I would also suggest maybe putting a little extra pinch of food in the tank, but not to much extra and this can help as well. I also suggest testing every 2-3 days, 4 max and see if your ammonia is registering. If it starts registering, leave it and keep testing until you see your nitrite spike. I don't mean to tell you all this to sound like I'm being patronizing or bitchy xD. Just some suggestions in case you didn't know any of this stuff. If you do, then feel free to tell me to piss off too.

Yeah, I've been keeping fish for like...shit almost 10 years. I've never managed to cycle such a small tank but as long as the ammonia is kept low it shouldn't be a problem (at least for a fish like a betta). This tank has been set for a year now, if it hasn't cycled I don't think it will. This betta is a fin biter, which Ive tried ...distracting his from but he just won't leave it. My other bettas were all so much easier to keep healthy. I've tried salt, more frequent small water changes, more hiding spots, moving stuff around, adding a background with a picture instead of solid color, I put things next to the tank for him to look at. Little guy is just permanently bummed and it's frustrating.

Maggie hasn't been doing the best recently, but we've been doing everything possible to keep her happy while she's still around. She's 15ish and mostly hangs around all day.
