I have a couple of newbie questions. I will probably be getting a basic nose piercing soon, and am seriously considering the septum as well. 1. I have to blow my nose several times a day. I feel like this is going to be a problem with a septum - or at least possibly painful or messy. Anyone have firsthand experience with this? Will it be as bad as I'm expecting? 2. I don't know for sure, but I may not be able to have a visible septum piercing at work. Is it possible to get it pierced with a piece of jewelry that allows it to be hidden until it heals? If so, what jewelry would I be looking for? 1. I have wicked allergies and had a cold when I had my septum pierced. It's not that painful/messy - you just have to use a pinch technique higher on your nose (above the piercing) and blow more gently than usual. 2. Absolutely! There are retainers available that you can flip the legs up inside your nose, as well as a CBB that can be widened to fit inside your nose, too.

I've got nose/allergy issues and am pretty snotty in general and my septum piercing hasn't been a problem. I was pierced with an Anatometal niobium retainer ( pictures here), then later switched to a plug once healed.

Honestly, colds with my septum retainer in super sucked - I'd get dried crusties and then they'd get dragged into the fistula which hurt like hell. Required lots of cleaning. But with an earskin in it's no big deal and no different to how it was pre-piercing. Although I have occasionally blown my earskin out when blowing my nose.

Septums are the easiest facial piercing to hide. It's a manner of getting a comfy retainer.
Also: protip--when it is healed, if you have glass jewelry or some metals, you can use effervescent denture cleaner for stubborn boogers. Ever since hearing about it from the guy from Pangea I've been using it when I have buildup.

Wow, thanks everyone! Your answers have definitely sealed the deal. I'm probably going to wait until winter is over, but this one is definitely on my list now.

Heh, blowing my nose (high nostrils and a 1g septum plug) is interesting. I'm happy I have narrow fingers, so I can pinch in right place between those. But I have to admit that I sometimes "pick" up my nostril with a napkin just to get all of the snot out.
But, by learning that pinching method I also learned to refraining from sneezing. I wasn't able to do that before.

I have such an annoying cold and It's gotten to the drippy nose part of it -_- I had to take my septum out last night because dabbing my nose with a tissue kept pushing my retainer up to my nostril piercing and annoying that.

I've just stretched mine to 12g, it was smooth and painless but my front teeth are really tingly feeling and it's super weird! Is that normal or is it a sign I went wrong somehow?

Yay for the stretch! I think it is completely normal, as septum is connected to the tendon on upper lip. Similarly nose would usually get sore after philtrum piercing. Feeling in teeth and gums is something that varies a lot between people, and has to do with your blood flow. It sounds nasty though, I hope it'll pass soon.

I was a little worried. It's been a couple of hours and everything feels fine now. The area where my top lip and gums connect is basically just a line of of scar tissue from my lip being surgically lowered, so I wonder if that contributed to it to being quite so sensitive? It was a very, very strange sensation! Thanks again

I took a few extra shifts this weekend and my entire body felt dried out and irritated while at work. I've had to oil the inside of my nose after work because it wouldn't stop stinging! (not to mention my hands and face) My septum is upset now and really tender I was going to stretch to 2ga soon but now that backfired. I think I might need to downsize actually.

If so, what jewelry would I be looking for? 1. It could be pretty uncomfortable at first. You can't really squish your nose like you normally would and I have blown jewelry out my nose a few times... I've found that's part of the reason I like rings so much is that they won't fly out your nose But you kinda just have to blow one nostril at a time until your piercing settles. I have a septum piercing and 2 nostril piercings - blowing my nose was just kinda weird for a while. 2. Yes. You can get pierced with a staple shaped retainer and keep that flipped up. Though it's recommended you keep it flipped up for the duration of healing and don't flip it up/down at all or at least as little as possible. ETA: Holy old quote batman! lol - still trying to get the hang of this new forum and I keep entering threads on the wrong page and not changing it...

I have been at 8g for 2 weeks officially now! My nose was not happy at first, so I was hesitant to say anything, but it's a million times better now. (I previously had a really badly placed septum piercing through cartilage, that I didn't realize was so wrong, and tried to stretch from 12g to 10g and was in agony for the 12 hours or so I had the jewelry in. Not eager to repeat the experience.)
Now I'm thinking goal size might be 2g. I could stack a decent amount of rings at 2g for special occasions, and 5/16 earskins are actually a decent fit for me so fingers crossed!

hey everyone. so, i have a couple of gws sf labrets on the way. i'm a bit concerned about the flares. the flare on the last plug i ordered from them was so big that i had to buy an omega retainer for comfort. however, i hate those because the wearable is usually so long. does anyone know of any companies that make in between sizes with smaller wearables?

Gorilla Glass front flares are pretty small, and I think they'll make a 1/4" wearable.
