Question - if I'm indecisive about what size to get punched at, is it better to err on the side of larger or smaller? Is it better to stretch up or downsize in the future? err smaller. there's no guarantee it'll shrink up at all, & you can always repunch larger.

There's a possibility the skin won't grow back over the hole? I did not know that... something to think about. Hmmm...

not only is it a possibility you'll keep a hole, it's LIKELY the skin won't grow over the hole.
16ga will become a divot. 8ga will become a pock mark at best. 6ga+ will very likely stay a visible hole.
YMMV

I can go without jewelry in mine for quite a while and they don't shrink up at all. I also saw some Youtube video about a girl who retired her conches, and there was still a very noticeable hole in them a while later (maybe years? Can't remember). Not awesome if you eventually change your mind. Personally, I would've punched larger. 6mm seemed huge at the time, but 5 years later I'm annoyed that they're not the same size as my helixes. I may get them repunched in the future, but in retrospect I should've gone the extra 2mm right off the bat. But that's just me

jenna also stretching one size isn't impossible. While it is true that stretching cartilage isn't fun, the soreness could easily last only for a week (or two). And I have to remember that it is always easy to find jewelry in smaller gauge that has large flares - as long as you're not putting in a tunnel none really knows which size you are at. So, I'd also vote for taking smaller size first. But yeah, I had battled between 2g and 4g and just when i settled I want a 2g, my piercer, whom I trust wholly, refused to make me anything larger than 4g. So it kind of was futile for me to think about that at all before consulting with him first. :) Anyways, good luck.

I'm kind of deciding between 6g and 4g, but I'm in the super early stages of planning so who knows. I think I am leaning towards 6g, but I do want to consult with a piercer about my concerns for sure!

Hello again! Sorry for the radio silence, basically life has been happening and I've been super busy. HOWEVER, today i went for the consultation i felt the need to update you all. First of all they're all lovely at the studio and concidering i'm usually super awkward in those situations, they answered all my questions and it was great. So, i'm able to get them done at 8mm, which is great because i assumed my ears where too small. I'll be getting them done with gorilla glass then sizing down (like, the length of the pin) after about a month, and it'll prob be done between the 8th and the 15th of April. i'll be getting them punched at 7mm and then tapered up to 8mm as apposed to just punched at 8, and both at once since i can sleep on my back. Also, thankfully i don't have to eat the punches (not judging anyone who has done, i just personally don't want to). I'M SO EXITED

I forgot to mention! I was also recommend to use something called Elma on the front and back of both ears about 45mins before. It's a numbing cream, so it'll wear off and there'll be pain obv, but i wont feel the punch itself. Has anyone any experience with this stuff or any other numbing cream? I've never used numbing cream before because I've never had a big enough mod for it to be necessary. Is there anything i should know or is it pretty simple?

Emla. I've used it (another brand, but same concept) on soft tissue and it worked great, but I'm not sure how well it will work on cartilage. Also iirc it needs to be covered in cling film and left for an hour or two. Not sure how that's going to work on a conch.
